Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, Oklahoma 918-786-2261. A. J Mayes, age 75, of Grove passed this life January 19, 2017 at the Oklahoma Heart Institute in Tulsa, OK. He was born July 5, 1941 in Muskogee, OK, the son of Thomas Lee and Ivan Bell (Harvel) Mayes. He attended Sequoyah School and graduated from Oktaha High School. He was a terrific baseball pitcher and won many trophies for Oktaha. After High School he attended Draughn's Business College in Oklahoma City. In 1961 he joined the United States Navy. He served in the Seabee MCB Battalion during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was honorably discharged in 1965. A.J. married Connie Morene Murchison on Feb. 12, 1971. Both worked for the Post Office in Tulsa. He was appointed Postmaster at Grove, OK and served there until his retirement. Throughout his life, he was known for his kindness, humor and compassion for his family and friends. He loved to fish, golf, read, garden and play with his grandchildren. He was a devoted, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and will forever be missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Joy Lee Mayes, , brothers Ernest, Jack, Vernon, Thomas Lee Jr. and Lester Ray Mayes and his beloved granddaughter Madison "Maddycakes" Mayes. Survivors include his wife, Connie of the home, son James A. Mayes and wife Kristi of Grove and daughter Jamie and husband Shane Boxberger of Jay. Three grand-daughters: Samantha & Whitney Holt and Ashley Mayes. Two sisters Wanda L. Hollis of Sand Springs and Linda Miller and husband George of Webbers Falls, OK. Two brothers Mack and wife Linda Mayes of Manford and Dan Lee Mayes of Oktaha. Two sister-in-laws Barbara Mayes of Muskogee and Margie Mayes of Oktaha and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Honorary pallbearers are James Mayes, George Miller, David Field, Robert Field, Mark Miller, Matt Bledsaw and Jason Bledsaw, Mack and Dan Mayes. Pallbearers are John Tanner, Cameron Smith, Donald Hulsey, Jeff Taylor, Chad Smith and Shane Boxberger. Our thanks to the doctors and nurses who cared for him. Together they fought a good fight, but it was his time to leave us. There is a Hebrew proverb that says: "Say not in grief he is no more, but live in thankfulness that he was." We will cherish our memories of him forever. Visitation will be Tuesday, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Worley Luginbuel Funeral Home, 711l South Main Street, Grove, OK Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Delaware Baptist Church 35551 South S620 Road, Grove, Oklahoma Interment will follow at Olympus North Cemetery in Grove, Oklahoma.
