Albert "Gene" Greb was born June 29, 1925, to Albert Rudolph and Agnes (Williamson) Greb, in Barling, Arkansas. He passed from this life March 5, 2011, at his home in Nowata, after reaching 85 years, 8 months, and 6 days. He attended school in Arkansas and on October 13, 1942 he joined the United States Navy. He honorably served his country during World War II, serving aboard the USS San Francisco heavy cruiser time he participated in the capture and occupation of Okinawa as well as service in the Aleutians Operations, Pacific Raids of 1943, Gilbert Islands operations, Marshall Islands operation, Asiatic-Pacific Raids of 1944, Western New Guinea operations, Marianas operation, Leyte operation, Luzon operation and Iwo Jima operations. Gene left the Navy on December 29, 1945. He worked for Brockway Glass in Muskogee, Oklahoma retiring from there after 20 years. On Valentines Day, February 14, 1976 he married Margaret "Marge" Smith, in Ada, Oklahoma. Gene was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Ada. He led a scouting group in Muskogee where he worked with mostly blind scouts. He enjoyed taking care of and teaching his scouts values they could use the rest of their lives. Gene liked to build bird houses, watch wild rabbits, and fish. About 7 years ago they moved to Nowata where he attended Saint Catherine Catholic Church, and attended the Nowata Senior Citizens events. Preceding Gene in death are his parents, one sister Margaret Greb, two step brothers and a step sister. Survivors include his wife Margaret, of the home in Nowata, two children, Jennifer Greb, and her husband John Whitlock, of Tulsa, Cathrine Miller, and her husband Bobby, of Bulverde, Texas, four grandchildren, Ashley Miller, Danielle Miller, Ainsley Whitlock, Isaac Whitlock, a brother Leon Greb, of Warner, Oklahoma, sisters, Stella Mae Koerdt, of Scranton, Arkansas, Edna Faye Shumway, of Paris, Arkansas, half brothers, Billy Don Powell, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, Harold Raymond Powell, of New Blaine, Arkansas, Carl Ray Powell, of Paris, Arkansas, three step sisters, one step brother, many other relatives as well as a host of friends.
