Allie Louvine (Lou) Sunday passed away Friday, June 25, 2010 in Bartlesville. She was the daughter of the late Berry Norris and Minnie Lee Johnson, and the wife of the late Clarence F. Sunday. Celebration of her life will be Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 10:00a.m. in the First Baptist Church with Dr. Joe Dan Fowler and Reverend Charles McCarthy of the Bartlesville Bible Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Tahlequah City Cemetery at 10:00a.m., Thursday, July 1, 2010 with Reverend Charles McCarthy presiding. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 6-7p.m. Tuesday. On-line condolences can be left at www.honoringmemories.com. Direction is under the Neekamp-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Bartlesville. Lou graduated from NSU at Tahlequah, OK with a BS Degree. Teaching was a major part of Lou Sunday's life. She taught in the Bartlesville Public School System until retirement in 1978. She was a member of the Bartlesville Education Association serving as president at one point, and a member of the Oklahoma Education Association. 3 Lou also spent many years in Adult Education, teaching English to Vietnamese and Hispanic students. She worked with ARC groups, teaching them table manners, how to use telephones, work math, and using films while teaching about other countries. Lou had a sense of adventure. She not only traveled throughout the United States, but to Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Europe, China, and Japan. Her sense of adventure also infused her life as an educator, a family member, and a member of the Bartlesville community. Having joined the Bartlesville Baptist Church in 1950, she taught Sunday School and High School students in Training Union for 25 years. She also volunteered at Jane Phillips Hospital and served as Treasurer for the Bank of Oklahoma Senior Advantage Center. Lou took early retirement to join her husband in traveling throughout the Cherokee Nation as he campaigned for the role of Council Member. She became easily recognizable by her tall hat that contained many of the campaign cards of those running for office within the Nation. Clarence served under Ross Swimmer and Wilma Mankiller. Lou and her husband taught school and worked on the Ute Reservation at Blanding, Utah. Survivors include three daughters, Gayle Hunter Young, Destin, FL, Jo Layne Kehle, Austin, TX, Karen and husband Dan Cockrell, Tulsa, OK; sister, Betty Jo Johnson, Bartlesville, OK; brother-in-law, George Mell, Ottawa, KS; six grandsons, Stephen and wife Kathleen Young, Cantonment, FL, Mark and wife Rebecca Young, Crestview, FL, Matthew and wife Jennifer Sunday, South Paris, MA, Peter Kehle, Austin, TX, Joel Kehle, Los Angeles,CA, Andrew Young, Destin, FL; one granddaughter, Stephenie Long and husband Charlie Jastram, Monroe, LA; one nephew; several cousins; and many friends. Deceased are brother, Bain Johnson; sister, Helen Mell; sister, Geneva Karbosky; brother-in-law, Joe Karbosky; one grandson, Eric Kehle; one nephew; and one great-grandson. A memorial in memory of Lou has been established for the Education Scholarship Fund at First Baptist Church, 405 S. Cherokee, Barltesville, OK 74003.
