Anna Marie (May) Johnston, 82, a resident of Grove, Oklahoma, passed peacefully into the loving arms of the Lord on Monday, January 31, 2011 at Grove Nursing Center. Anna was born on October 12, 1928 in Topeka, Kansas to Fredrick May and Eva (Feil) May Helmer. Anna married Walter E. Johnston on October 19, 1946 in Salina, Kansas. Mrs. Johnston attended Business College while working part time for Colonel Clem at St. John's Military Academy in Salina, Kansas. She later worked as a legal secretary for Branine, Ice, Flynn & Brown in Newton, Kansas. After moving with Walt to Redfield, Kansas (near Uniontown), Anna worked for the Farm Company and Agricultural Engineering in Uniontown, Kansas. For several years, Anna owned Herbal Discoveries, Inc., through which she sold Nature's Sunshine products. During this time, Anna also served as church secretary for the Uniontown-Redfield-Hiattville Churches. She was the organist for the Uniontown Methodist Church for 24 years. Anna loved to play the organ, and make banners from cloth. One of Anna's cloth banners, made for the First United Methodist Church Men's Club, won first place at Purdue University, and was displayed in the Upper Room in Nashville, Tennessee for six months. Another banner made by Anna for the Kansas East Conference was selected to be hung at the Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games. Anna also loved to present religious chalk drawings to music, especially when her daughter Nancy played accompaniment on the piano. Anna was preceded in death by her father, mother, and brothers Alex, David and Frances, and her sister Kathleen Kay. Survivors include her Love of sixty-four years, Walter Eugene Johnston, brother Harvey May and wife Erna of Troy, Virginia, son Keith (Debra) Johnston of McPherson, Kansas, and daughter Nancy (Bob) Potter, Grove. Anna's grandchildren are Kurtis (Angie) Johnston of Shawnee, Kansas, Kyle (Lisa) Johnston of Overland Park, Kansas, Pastor Steven (Kristy) Broers of Fontanelle, Iowa. Step-grandchildren are Regan (John) Cameron of Osceola, Missouri and Chelsea (Kevin) Payne of Moundridge, Kansas. Great-grandchildren are Kole Robert and Kaleigh Marie Johnston, Sophia Irene, Malachi Steven and Micah Emmanuel Broers, Chaz Richard and Tanner Ray Epperson, and Reanna LaVonne and Ruger Westin Cameron. Also, nephew Dave May, Wichita, Kansas and niece Sandy May of Las Vegas, NV, whom Anna raised as her own after their parents died. In addition, Anna leaves a host of other nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends. The family of Mrs. Johnston will have a luncheon from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 320 South Cedar, Marion, Kansas. Funeral services will be in Marion, Kansas, on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Eastmoor Methodist Church in Marion. Interment will follow in the Marion Highland Cemetery. Following the service family and friends are invited back to Eastmoor Methodist Church for fellowship with the family.
