It is with deep sorrow and much love we mourn the passing of Barbara Jean (Oakley) Hiatt on January 27th, 2023. She left us much too soon and will be sorely missed.
Barbara was born to William Fred and Vivian Oakley on September 26th, 1953. She was the middle child of 3 girls born at St. John Hospital in Tulsa.
Her family moved to Claremore when Barbara was in second grade.
She grew up in Claremore and graduated HS in 1971.
She received a teaching degree in special education in only three years from
Northeastern State College in Tahlequah graduating in 1974.
After college Barbara married Tom Hale. They had two beautiful children, Thomas and Elizabeth. During the first part of their marriage, they worked together in Edmond for Origami.
Moving back to Tulsa, after the dissolution of her marriage, Barbara enjoyed many years in the Real Estate business. This included home building and mortgage lending for Palm Harbor, Clayton Homes and U-Build It. With her gifted talent of decorating and design, custom home building was a perfect fit. She loved her customers!
In September 2011, Barbara met Dr. Bill Hiatt. They had an instant connection and
married soon after meeting. Barbara and Bill built a wonderful life together in Bartlesville with their blended family. Originally raised Lutheran, she had been a Catholic for 20 + years at the time of meeting Bill. In 2015 after the death of his father, Bill began attending RCIA and became a Catholic.
Barbara was an active member of St. John Before the Latin Gate Catholic Church in Bartlesville. Always willing to lend a helping hand and take up a good cause. Just to name a few, Oaks Children’s Mission in Tahlequah, Spiritual Sisters at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Divine Mercy and praying at the bedside for the dying at Porta Caeli House and The Journey Home. She was involved in many Church ministries: Rosarians, Divine Mercy prayer group, RCIA, Flower Committee (she was responsible for taking care of flowers at the chapel) and helped with Theology After Hours events. She was responsible for initiating the billboard campaign in Bartlesville for Divine Mercy. So many lives are changed and enriched by this ministry.
Barbara meant so much to so many. She will reside in our hearts forever.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include, husband Bill, children Thomas and Elizabeth, Sisters Debbie Roberts and husband Jack, Kathy Stokes and husband Ladd, Sister-in- law Carla Lyle and husband Ray, Sister-in law Diane Dugger and husband Jerry, Stepchildren, Jon Hiatt, Daniela (Herrera) Hiatt, Libby Hiatt and Bill’s stepdaughter Jami Lewis. Grandchildren: Benjamin, Georgia, Hailey, Elena, Kaylin, and Evan, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers Barbara would appreciate you donating to the Oaks Children’s Mission in Tahlequah or the Divine Mercy Billboard group at St John Catholic Church in Bartlesville.
