Bertha Mae Slate, 81, lifelong citizen of Nowata, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015 in Hot Springs, AR. She was born September 11, 1933 in Nowata to Lester and Minnie (Coker) Fry. She was a Nowata High School Graduate. Bertha served the citizens of Nowata County for many years working in both the Nowata County Court Clerk's office as well as serving as secretary of the Nowata County Commissioner's office. She was a member of the Church of God as well as served on the Nowata County Jubilee Board and the Boys and Girls Club Board. She loved the people of Nowata County and did all she could to make Nowata County a better place to live. On May 28, 1970 she married Milburn Jackson Slate in Mannford, Oklahoma. He passed away in 2010. In her spare time Bertha enjoyed gardening but most of all cooking and caring for her family was what was dearest to her heart. Her husband, children, and grandchildren were truly loved by Bertha. She will be missed by all who knew her. Bertha is survived by three children, Beth Hayes and husband Dan of Nowata, Nancy Walton and husband Stan of Hot Springs, AR., Alva Brown of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Austin Brown, Taylor Walton, Tim Hayes, Paula Hewitt, Connor Brown, Shyanne Brown, five great grandchildren, several step children and step-grandchildren, many other relatives as well as a host of friends. Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Minnie Fry, her husband Milburn J. Slate; a brother, Howard Fry; and a sister, Thelma Kemmerer.
