Betty Attaway Wiemer, age 94, widow of Robert F. Wiemer, longtime resident of Bartlesville, died July 7, 2007. Betty Attaway Wiemer was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, August 18, 1912, to Douglas and Bessie (Fisher) Attaway. After graduation from Byrd High School, Class of 1929, Betty spent a year at Sweet Briar College in Virginia before transferring to the University of Missouri in Columbia, where she graduated with a degree in Journalism. She was President of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and also active in the Delta Phi Delta honorary art fraternity. It was there that she met her future husband, Bob. Following graduation she returned home and was active during the depression years in the Shreveport Junior League in their charitable programs. Betty married Robert F. Wiemer of Joplin, Missouri, in Shreveport on November 2, 1937. They made their home in Bartlesville, where he was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company until 1939, when he was transferred to Houston, Texas. During the assignment in Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Wiemer had twins, David Robert and Betsy Jean, on September 16, 1940 before returning to Bartlesville. With the start of World War II, Mr. Wiemer was soon sent to the SW Pacific. Betty returned to Shreveport where she was busy with toddlers and volunteer work with the Junior League, the Red Cross, U.S.O., and Travelers Aid. On their return to Bartlesville, Betty was active with the P.T.O., Scouting activities and work with the Presbyterian Church Women's Association. She was Secretary of Literature in the First Presbyterian Church and in the Synodical. Other activities included helping at the Red Cross Canteen at the Blood Bank and at the local Hospital Auxiliary Snack Bar. She also participated in the Salvation Army Auxiliary, was a member of the C. H. Chapter of P.E.O. and active in the A.A.U.W. After Bob chose early retirement so that they could spend time traveling, they thoroughly enjoyed visiting many countries around the world for almost twenty years. Mrs. Wiemer also enjoyed a lifelong interest in wildflowers and always delighted in identifying them on their travels. Mrs. Wiemer was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Wiemer, and is survived by her son, D. Robert Wiemer, M.D., and wife Beverly of Houston, Texas, daughter Betsy McLoughlin, PhD., and husband Norman of Grand Junction, Colorado, grandsons D. Robert Wiemer, Jr. and wife, Nikol, of Nashville, TN, J. Bradley Wiemer and Susan Mears of Cary, NC, and B. Sean McLoughlin of Grand Junction, CO, and four great-grandchildren, Reid and Alexis of Nashville, TN and Aidan and Tristan of Cary, NC. A memorial service for Mrs. Wiemer will be held July 14, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville at 3:00 PM, with the Rev. Andrew S. Odom presiding.
