Billy Joe McLean 67, of Nowata passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville. He was born on September 2, 1941 in Ashland Kansas to Arthur "Hi" Theodore McLean and Katheryn Williams McLean. Billy graduated from Protection Kansas High School in 1959. He was the co-caption of the football team. Billy then attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. Billy married Diana Crum on December 11, 1982 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was a faithful member of the Methodist Church whether he was in Hutchinson, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, or Nowata. Billy loved being on the water; he enjoyed boating, fishing, and teaching others to boat and fish. He was a historian; he loved history and never gave up the opportunity to share what he knew about history with others. He studied the Kansas Calvary and frequented many historical museums. Billy was a retired member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed visiting the Senior Citizen Home, and attending church lunches, but most of all he loved his family. His memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Nowata with Pastor Jim Perkins officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Billy's name to the Senior Citizen Home 307 S. Cedar, Nowata, OK 74048 or the Historical Museum 121 S. Pine, Nowata, OK 74048. Online condolence may be left for the McLean family at www.honoringmemories.com Cremation and memorial services were entrusted with Benjamin Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife Diana of the home, 2 brothers Barry and his wife Bonnie McLean of Pocola, Kansas, and Byron and his wife Anita McLean of Milford, Kansas, 2 nieces Michelle McLean and Mica McLean of Junction City, Kansas, and numerous extended family members and friends. Billy was preceded in death by his parents AT and Katheryn McLean.
