LaVern Stroud 74, of Nowata passed away at 10:56 p.m. at his home on Monday, January 5, 2009. Blaine LaVern Stroud was born on August 8, 1934 in Nowata, Oklahoma to Lo Bo "Dick" Stroud and Ida (McDaniels) Stroud. He graduated from Nowata High School; he then became a rancher and horseman. LaVern was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Nowata Round-Up Club, the American Quarter Horse Association, and the Jockey Club. LaVern campaigned for the Para Mutual Wagering in the State of Oklahoma. He was an avid horseman and enthusiast. LaVern married Helen Hensley on October 21, 1974 in Coffeyville, Kansas. He never gave up the chance to spend time with his grandchildren or his horses. LaVern tutored many neighborhood kids and consequently became a mentor to them. He loved his grandchildren, horses, and the outdoors so when he was able to watch his grandchildren ride he could not have been any happier. LaVern is survived by his loving wife Helen of 34 years, two daughters Carrie and her husband Curtis Stacy of Nowata, Ouida Brady and her friend Lynez of Nowata, four grandchildren Shannon Doshier and her husband Earna of Nowata, Trey Stacy of Nowata, Charlie Brady and his wife and their three children of Tulsa, and Crystal Brady of Tulsa, one great grandson Easten Lee Doshier of Nowata, one sister Beulah White of Talala, one sister in law June Cody of Nowata, two nieces Donna Sue and her husband Marvin Casebeer of Talala, Linda and her husband Eric Chin of Aurora, CO., one nephew Larry and his wife Vickie Stroud of Fort Collins, CO., his friend and home health care worker for 13 years Rachelle White, numerous great nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Dick and Ida Stroud, one brother Leonard Stroud, Nephew Charles "Chuck" White, two brother in laws Howard Hensley and Red White. Funeral services for LaVern Stroud are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2009 in the First Baptist Church of Nowata with Rev. Tom Tanquary and Rev. Todd Brock officiating. Final committal rites will be accorded Mr. Stroud in the Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery.
