Brooks Wood Spies, 89-year-old Bartlesville resident passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Green Country Village in Bartlesville. A memorial service for Mr. Spies will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, July 26, 2008 at the St. Luke's Episcopal Church with Dr. T. Lee Stephens officiating. Spies was born December 9, 1918 in Bartlesville to Fredrick John Spies, Jr. and Gladys Jeanette Wood-Spies. He attended Exeter Prep School and then went on to Williams College. He later graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio with his Bachelor's Degree in Economics. On October 7, 1944 he married Beverly Ann Duston. They had three children and spent nearly 25 wonderful years together until she passed away on March 31, 1969. He later married Ruth Ehrlich in February of 1977. She also preceded Mr. Spies in death on December 4, 2001. Mr. Spies began working with Phillips Petroleum in the Business Forms Division on July 1, 1946 and later retired from Phillips on March 1, 1984. He was a member of the Phillip's Men's Club as well as a board member for the Bartlesville Little Theater. Mr. Spies was an avid golfer and served several years on the board at the Country Club. He also spent countless hours at Kane Elementary as a mentor for the reading program. Mr. Spies also greatly enjoyed singing in the choir and having a quite active membership at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Mr. Spies is survived by two daughters, Marie Lansford and her husband Rand E. of Harrah, Oklahoma and Diane Williams and her husband Lewis E. of Ft. Worth, Texas; by a daughter-in-law, Susan Spies of Lansing, Kansas; by 8 grandchildren; by 9 step-grandchildren; and by 15 great-grandchildren. Mr. Spies was preceded in death by his parents; by his two wives; by a son, Brooks Wood Spies, Jr.; by a brother Jack Spies; and by two sisters, Elizabeth Branch and Janet Cox.
