JONES, CARL W., 93, died on March 27, 2010 at his home on Briarwood in Bartlesville, OK. Carl was born August 9, 1916, in Austin, TX, to parents William S. and Louise Jones. He graduated from Austin High School in 1933 and from the University of Texas in 1937. His Texas National Guard unit was mobilized in July of 1940, putting on hold his last year of law school. He served in the 57th Cavalry Brigade until August of 1941, when he was accepted into the Army Air Corps. Carl was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from navigator's school. He was part of an air crew formed at Everest, WA, and they flew their brand new Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress to Muroc Dry Lake (later Edwards Air Force Base) for training, and then on to England. He served with the 305th Bombardment Group (Hvy) of the 8th Air Force, based at Chelveston, England. He was wounded on a mission to St. Nazare in January of 1943, and his aircraft (Devil's Playmate) and its entire crew were lost on a mission the following day. Due to his wounds, he was discharged in 1944, and returned to the University of Texas to earn his law degree in 1945. He met & married Martha Kelley in 1946, and they had 38 wonderful years together before she passed away in 1984. Carl began his law career in Ft. Worth, but was soon hired to open a new office for Phillips Petroleum Company in Midland, TX. He was transferred to Bartlesville in 1963. His work with Phillips Petroleum took him to such places as Norway, Saudi Arabia and Iran. He was admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States, as well as in the Supreme Courts of Texas and Oklahoma. He served as the President of both the Midland County (TX) and the Washington County Bar Associations. He retired as Senior Counsel of Phillips Petroleum Company in 1979. Carl was an avid fisherman, hunter and shooter, and an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment of the Constitution. He spoke fondly of his trips to Rabbit Ears Lodge in Colorado, and of dove and deer hunting with his sons. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Bartlesville, the National Rifle Association, the Bartlesville Sportsman Club, the Bartlesville Bullmoose Investment Club, the American Legion, the 305th Bombardment Group Memorial Association, the University of Texas Ex-Students Association, the American Bar Association, and the Oklahoma Bar Association. Besides his wife Martha, Carl was preceded in death by his son, Judge Carl B. Jones; and by his brother, LTC Ralph F. Jones. He is survived by his son, Ronald, and his wife Ellen of Tulsa; his daughter-in-law Marcia Jones of Edmond, granddaughter Tiffany and her husband Chris Lambert, great-granddaughter Isabelle Lambert, and granddaughter Heather Jones all of Edmond, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral services for Mr. Jones will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of the Neekamp - Luginbuel Funeral Home in Bartlesville. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded by the North East Oklahoma VFW Honor Guard.
