Charles Hayes, 78, resident of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Forrest Manor Nursing Center in Dewey, Oklahoma. Charles Hayes was born April 24, 1933 in Bronx, New York, son of Raymond Herman Hayes and Gladys Louise Hayes. Charles grew up in New York, leaving his formal education, at the age of 16, he joined the Merchant Marines to help support his family. After spending several years in that sector and traveling all over the world, Charles was drafted into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1963 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Following his military service, Charles worked in the moving and storage business. It was during this time he met and married Joyce Lynn Johnson on December 17, 1977 in Pasadena, California. They continued to make their home in California for the next 17 years where they increased their family with the birth of a son, Steven, and where Charles was a chauffeur for the "rich and famous". One of Charles' favorite things to say was, "I never drove a person I didn't like." In 1994, the Hayes family moved to Bartlesville. Since that time, Charles has enjoyed watching "Westerns", as well as mowing the yard, landscaping, painting their rentals, working on their three acres, and sitting on the front porch with his wife, son and their three dogs. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Hayes, of the family home in Bartlesville; son, Steven Hayes also of the family home; four brothers and their families, Frank, Jerry, Walter and Ronald; sister-in-law, Karen LeMone and her daughter, Danielle LeMone and Danielle's son, Brandon Jefferson, and Karen's son, Shawn LeMone and his wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Sophia; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roger, Ray and Bill; and brothers-in-law, Larry LeMone and David Frank Johnson.
