Charles Homer Nelson, Afton resident, age 82, died Friday August 6, 2010, in Joplin, Missouri surrounded by his family. He was born May 2, 1928 in Bernice, Oklahoma to his parents, Homer and Leona (Creason) Nelson. Charles married the love of his life, Helen Cockrell in Jay, Oklahoma on Christmas Day of 1947. Charles and Helen have lived in the area for approximately forty years. Charles has been a member of the Independent Baptist Church for thirty-seven years. He was also a member of the Gideon's, and enjoyed working at the church. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry Nelson; and two brothers, Robert and Jerry Nelson. Charles leaves many loving memories with his family, his wife, Helen; a daughter, Helen Kranenburg and husband Mark; two brothers, Everett Nelson and wife Myrtle, and Leslie Nelson and wife Shirley; a sister, Lois Pitts and husband Jack; three grandchildren, Jennifer Decker, Casey Nelson and Cody Nelson; as well as many other loving relatives and a host of friends. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday August 10, 2010 at the Independent Baptist Church with Pastor Marty Hughes officiating. Casketbearers will be Casey Nelson, Cody Nelson, Jess Clark, Ted Dappen, Bruce Hensley and Joe Nowlin. Honorary Bearers will be Don Brewer and Dr. Tom Nicklas. Interment will follow at Olympus Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Charles' memory to the Gideon's. Services are entrusted to Worley Luginbuel Funeral Home of Grove.
