Charles Winfield Selby was born February 22, 1911, in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, the oldest child of Floyd and Marion (Jones) Selby's three children. He attended schools in Sapulpa, where he played football and baseball. He graduated from High School in 1928. He attended the University of Oklahoma until the Depression and the need to join the workforce forced him to put his studies aside. After roughnecking in the oil fields and working construction, he returned to Oklahoma University in fall of 1933 and graduated from Law School in 1937. He entered practice with J. Robert Ray in Bartlesville in June of 1937. In February 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He completed Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and in 1944, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He was assigned to the Judge Advocate General's Office in Washington, D. C., serving there until his discharge from service in July, 1946. Returning to Bartlesville, Charles reentered the practice of law with Mr. Ray until Mr. Ray retired in 1952. He subsequently continued a successful and respected law practice until his retirement in 2006, at which time he was the Senior Partner of the law firm of Selby, Connor, Maddux and Janer. Charles married his college sweetheart, Ruth Ray in the fall of 1938. They had no children. She passed away in 1968. He later met Elmo "Mo" M. Glass, and they were married in the fall of 1969. Charles later adopted Mo's daughter Susan. Mo died in Bartlesville in 1996. During his career he served as an Assistant County Attorney. He was on the Board of Directors and was President of the Kiwanis Club. He was a director on the boards of Peoples Federal Savings and Loan Association; Union Bank and Trust ; Forum Cafeterias; the Oklahoma State Golf Association and the Board of Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church. He also served on the Hillcrest Country Club Board of Directors, serving as it's president in 1956. He was a long time member of the Washington County, Oklahoma State and American Bar Associations. Charles was an avid student of the game of golf. He was club champion at Hillcrest a number of times. With Bill Winslow as his partner, he won the Oklahoma State Foreball Championship. He was a member of the United States Golf Team, competing at the World Senior Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colorado against teams from over 35 other countries from 1966 through 1970. The team won the tournament each of the years he was a member. He traveled over the country following his love of golf. One area of his practice of law which gave him great satisfaction and pleasure was his work with Ted Lyon in setting up and creating the Lyon Foundation. He has served on the Board of the Foundation from its inception and actively participated in funding the many projects throughout this area for which the Foundation provided funds. His parents, brother and sister predeceased him. Charles is survived by his daughter, Susan Barnett, two grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews and numerous friends who shall miss him. He would be pleased if contributions to a favorite charity were made in his name.
