Benjamin Funeral Service - Nowata, Oklahoma - 918-273-2700............................................................. Charles Leroy "Chuck" Sherrick, 79-year-old Nowata resident, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at the Jane Phillips Nowata Health Center. He was born on June 6, 1937 in Vinita to Elgin and Eldora (Curry) Sherrick. Chuck attended school in Vinita, where he starred on the basketball team in high school. He married Ruby Miller in 1957, from this union two children were born, Karen in 1963 and Wade in 1968. Later he married Sharon Hayes in 1973 and they had a son Curt Leroy born in 1980. Chuck served his country in the United States Army from 1960 to 1964. He worked as a cowboy on many ranches, including, the Kane, Dustin, Mullendore, Ti Valley, Lost Spur and the ReMount of Wyoming. The Remount was where Mary O'Hara wrote the "Green Grass of Wyoming" and "My Friend Flicka". Chuck also worked on oil rigs in Louisiana, Texas and locally. He later worked for Home of Hope in Vinita, Bios in Bartlesville and Mr. J's Tire in Nowata. In 1998 he married Jean Standeford and they made their home in Nowata. Chuck was a true horse lover, studying the breeding lineage of horses and could tell you all about many different horses. Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Evelyn Jean Allen, a brother, J. B. Sherrick, his daughter Karen Sherrick and a step-son, David Samson, The surviving family includes; his wife Jean Sherrick of the home, two son's Wade Sherrick and wife Kim of Welch, Curt Sherrick and wife Chelli of Purcell; grandchildren, Tyler Ross Sherrick and wife Sierra, Dillon Sherrick, Colt Sherrick, Dale Sherrick, Lexi Sherrick and Baley Sherrick; step-granddaughter, Holly Hall, Rachael Marrs, step-grandsons, Casey Marrs, Caleb Samson and wife Melanie, Jeremy Hall; step-great-grandchildren, Cameron Samson, Alexandria, and Payton Marrs, Ruby, Ivy and Truman Hall. The graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Williams Timberhill Cemetery east of Welch, Oklahoma, Pastor Wendell Abbott will officiate.
