Chester Long

October 15, 1927 — May 20, 2007

Chester "Chet" I. Long II, 79, a resident of Grove passed away in Joplin, Missouri on Sunday, May 20, 2007. Chet was born on October 17, 1927 to George B. and Leona (Groff) Long in Lamar, Colorado. Mr. Long was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps in World War II; he was honorably discharged in 1945. Mr. Long graduated from college with a BS in Geology in Colorado where he met and married Margaret Patricia "Pat" Younger, they were married 59 years. He worked as a field geologist in Oklahoma City and the Tulsa area. In their free time they spent most weekends boating and fishing on Grand Lake. After retirement they moved to Grove where they have lived for the past twenty-five years. Chet received many awards for his tireless efforts in establishing and training water testing programs for the lake area. He also volunteered at both the Humane and Audubon Society. He made numerous "bird boxes" that are still used on the bluebird trails today. Mr. Long is survived by his two children, Dr. Chester I Long and his wife Karen of Joplin and Janet Bell and her husband Kevin of Springfield, MO. He leaves five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, as well as a brother George I Long of Billings, MT and a Brother in law Robert Younger of Amarillo, TX. Graveside services for Mr. Long are on Friday, May 25, 2007 at Southwest City Cemetery at 10:00 AM with Chaplain Paul Milliken officiating. Services are under the direction of the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove.
