As a young man he worked to support his mother and siblings in the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC), working in the Nowata and Spavinaw areas. Ted served his country in the Army during World War II for over 25 months, 11 of which were spent overseas. His duty overseas serving with the 78th Engineer Combat Battalion took him to the Philipine jungles, then Yokohama, and Tokyo, Japan. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Philipine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, and he received an Honorable Discharge on May 5, 1946. He was in the inactive Army Reserves until 1950. His country called him to active duty again in the Korean Conflict, serving from 1950 to 1951 at Ft. Hood, Texas. Ted loved the outdoors; he was an accomplished hunter, and a master fisherman, receiving several awards and trophies for his talents.
