Benjamin Funeral Service - Nowata, Oklahoma......................................... Dan Edward Mitchell was born on the 16th day of September 1935 in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to Philip and Wilma (Hill) Mitchell. He passed away peacefully at 11:05pm on 25 January 2016 at the age of 80. Dan was a family man and outdoorsman, who enjoyed all sports to include fishing, football, running, and bowling. He also loved to sing gospels, write, and painting. One his highlights in life was being featured in Field and Stream Magazine, for catching a 116lb tarpon with just a basic rod and reel, off the MacDill Air Force Base, (Tampa, FL) fishing pier. Dan graduated from Neosho High School in 1954, where he excelled in sports and academics. He was All State Football and All State Track and Field, as well as the high school newspaper sports editor. During the 1954 Missouri state track meet, Dan won 3rd place in the 880-yard run with a time of 1:51 min. He was offered a 4yr college football scholarship to Missouri Valley College, but chose to enlist into the Army instead, volunteering for the draft on 14 September 1954. Dan honorably served his country from 1954-1977. He started his Army career as an Infantry Soldier, later transferred to the Air Defense Artillery branch, culminating his career as a Special Agent in Military Intelligence. Dan deployed to several locations throughout the world, to include deploying to Vietnam in 1969. Dan was a proud Vietnam Veteran, and is a member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans. He had a special bond with his fellow veterans. Dan was an amazing husband and father. He always went above and beyond to make sure we were all taken care of and did lots of special things for the family. He was a hero to his family and we loved him with all our hearts. He will be missed greatly, but we are truly blessed to have great memories that we will always hold near to our hearts. Dan had many friends and family who will miss him dearly.
