Doris L. Selvidge, 89, of Grove, OK, passed away at 9:30 p.m., on Monday, February 23, 2009 at Grand Lake Villa Skilled Nursing Center, following a battle with cancer. Doris was born October 5, 1919 in Cato, Kansas to Perry L. and Helena Beals. Doris was married to Russell H. Selvidge on January 2, 1942 in Fort Scott, KS. As a soldier's wife, Doris followed Russell across the States until they settled in Wichita, KS in 1943. In 1985, they moved to Grove, OK. Russell preceded her in death on May 31, 1999. Doris was also preceded in death by both parents and one brother, Ancil M. Beals. Doris visited and honored deceased family member's graves every Memorial Day through May 31, 2008. Doris is survived by two brothers, Lester D. Beals and Perry E. Beals both of Wichita, KS; one sister, Dona J. Campbell of Sedgwick, KS; eight nephews; four nieces; several great-nephews and great-nieces; numerous extended family members; and many dear friends. She was a member of the graduating "Class of 1937" from Arcadia High School in Arcadia, Kansas. She attended Fort Scott Junior College in Fort Scott, KS and then Pittsburg State Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS. She earned a degree in Business Administration from Wichita State University. Her early career days included teaching school in SE Kansas; Marshall Deputy, Guardette for Beech Aircraft, building contractor (owner and operator), and Procurement Quality control for Boeing Military Airplane Company - all in Wichita, KS. She retired from Boeing in July of 1982, after 30 years. She was a true pioneer, having lived from the "horse & buggy" to the NASA Apollo Missions. She was a long time contributor to numerous foundations including the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation. Her many interests and commitments included the American Red Cross as a volunteer and supporter; Sustaining Member since 1977 of the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW); long time member of the National Quilters Association and American Quilters Association. She is known in Grove, OK by many close friends and associates as a member of the Grove Quilters Guild, having owned and operated the former Grove Quilt Shop for 14 years. Some of Doris' greatest joys in life included family gatherings, flowers and gardening, community events, reading about current events, fellowshipping with friends and family, and enjoying good food (especially potatoes). The family extends a special thanks to nephew Roger Beals, Thelma MacNeil and Cathy King for their loving and tender care. We, the family and friends of Doris, will forever cherish the enrichment her life brought to our lives. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel, 711 S. Main, Grove, OK with Geoff Buffalo officiating. The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Pleasant View (Large) Cemetery in Cato, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. with Steve Cole officiating.
