Dorothy Jorrs

Dorothy Melinda Gunter Jorss, age 90, a longtime resident of Bartlesville, died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at her home. Dorothy Melinda Gunter Jorss was born in New Cambria, Missouri, March 4, 1916, the daughter of Benjamen Allard Gunter and Freda Fern Jones Gunter. Dorothy moved with her family to Bartlesville when she was two years old and attended local schools graduating from Bartlesville High School in 1934. She then attended Lindenwood College and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1938. She furthered her studies at the University of Oklahoma as well as George Mason College in Virginia. She taught one year on the Plymouth Oil Lease and then at Washington School in Bartlesville. In 1944, she went to Washington D.C. to work for the F.B.I. where she worked until returning to Bartlesville in 1950. Dorothy Gunter and Hans Walter Jorss were married June 17, 1949 at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C... Mr. Jorss was with the Internal Revenue and she taught again at Washington School until 1955. Mr. Jorss was transferred to Oklahoma City as Supervisor until 1963 when he was transferred to the Appellate Division in Washington D.C... After serving in the Appellate Division, he retired and they moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They returned to Bartlesville in August 1974. Mrs. Jorss was a member of Chi Omega sorority, Woolaroc, the Oklahoma Historical Society, the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, the Smithsonian, Christ Church, Irvington, Va., Mount Vernon Association, and the Williamsburg Association. Mrs. Jorss is survived by two children, Hans Gunter Jorss and his wife Joanie of Bartlesville and Melinda Jorss Bartling and her husband Paul of Tucson, Arizona, Two grandsons Benjamin DiJanni of Jacksonville, Florida and Matthew DiJanni of Bartlesville. She is preceded in death by her husband Hans Walter Jorss. A memorial has been established with the Saint Labre Indian School and those who wish to contribute may do so in lieu of flowers to the Saint Labre Indian School, Ashland, Montana, 59004. Memorial services for Mrs. Jorss will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 29, 2006 at the Grace Community Church. The Reverend Rod MacIlvaine of the Grace Community Church of Bartlesville, Ok. will preside over the services. Funeral services are under the direction of the Neekamp-Luginbuel Funeral Home.
