Douglas Elmo Charles, 92 year old Vinita resident, died Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Craig General Hospital in Vinita. He was born November 29, 1919 in Gideon, Oklahoma to Stephen K. and Cora Alta (Roberts) Charles. Mr. Charles had worked at Eastern State Hospital, Pryor Foundry and as a Cemetery Sexton for Fairview Cemetery in Vinita. He was in the United States Army from March 5, 1942 to September 2, 1942 when illness caused his Honorable Discharge. Mr. Charles married Roxie Juanita Turner on June 21, 1941 in Pryor; they would have celebrated 71 years of marriage this month. He was a member of the White Oak Baptist Church and formerly the American Legion. Mr. Charles loved watching baseball, football, fishing off of Bernice Bridge and going to all the grandchildren's sporting events. He was also a very talented musician, playing the Fiddle, Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo and the piano, he was a regular participant in Fiddle Contest. Mr. Charles was dearly loved by his family and they will greatly miss him. The family includes: his wife Roxie; his children; Leroy Charles and wife Sigrid of Pryor, J. L. Charles and wife Roberta of White Oak, Sue Hults and husband Ed of Bluejacket, Carl Charles and wife Susan of Moulton, Alabama, Linda Tennyson and husband Leon of Bluejacket, Betty Langley and husband Joe of Bluejacket, Sharon Layman and husband Terry of Vinita, a daughter in-law Myrna Charles; 23 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death, were his parents, a son Tommy Wayne Charles, daughter in-law, Mary Sue Charles; brothers, Carlton, Gilbert, Dee, Clifton, Durward, and Harlton Charles. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the White Oak Baptist Church with Pastor Leland Bartlett officiating. Interment will follow at the White Oak Cemetery.
