Mr. Edger Melvin "Mel" Shaw, Jr., 84, longtime resident of Bartlesville died Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center. Edger Melvin Shaw was born March 29, 1928 in rural Okmulgee, Oklahoma the son of Edger Melvin Shaw, Sr. and Ida Mae (Ganus) Shaw. Melvin, Jr. "Mel" and his family moved from the Okmulgee to Phillips, Texas when he was 12 years old graduating from Phillips High School in 1945. He joined the United States Army serving for three years as a Paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division, being called the "Angels". Upon discharge, he continued his education at the University of Texas where he attained a Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering. It was during his time in Texas he met and married Miss Elsie R. Matlock. Mel and Elsie were united in marriage June 3, 1950 in Phillips, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw moved to Odessa following Mel's graduation from college, where Mel began his association with Phillips Petroleum Company. They transferred to Bartlesville in 1959 and continued to make their home here. After a 35 year career, he retired in 1985. Elsie preceded Mel in death in December of 1996. Mel was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where he had served as Deacon for 15 years. He took numerous medical mission trips to Nicaragua and multiple World Changers mission trips with the youth. He taught the kindergarten Sunday school class for 16 years, volunteered at bible school, the Family Life Center and the prayer room. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Elsie. Mel is survived by his two daughters, Janet Watson and her husband, Fred, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; their daughters, Amy Dunsworth and her husband, Daniel, of Dallas and their two sons, Garrett and Bryce; and Sara Flores and her husband, Giovanni, of Quito, Ecuador; Pamela Mabry and her husband, Tom, of Owasso, Oklahoma; her son, Matthew Frye and his wife, Lisa, of Bartlesville and their two sons, Adam and Noah; two sisters and a brother.
