Eleanor Marie Lewis, eighty nine year old longtime Vinita resident died Tuesday December 6, 2011 at her home. She was born September 24, 1922 in La Cygne, Kansas the daughter of Lee Toal Burnett and Vivian Haynes Burnett. She was reared and received her education graduating high school at LaCygne in 1940 and attended Texas Christian University and Kansas State University at Manhattan before she enlisted in the Waves. She was stationed at Hunter College in New York City. She attended storekeeper's school in Boston, (the first Wave Company in Boston) and the Naval Air station in Norman, Oklahoma. She met William "Bill" Lewis while in Norman and were married October 31, 1944 and made their home in Vinita. Eleanor was an educator having taught school for thirty years in the Bluejacket and Vinita school systems. She was a member of the First united Methodist Church, the American Legion auxiliary, the PEO, retired teachers of Craig County, a life member of OES, life member of the Grange and a member of Beta Sigma Phi. Eleanor leaves behind one daughter, Jane Garland and her husband "Buddy" of Vinita, two grand children Clay Garland of Vinita, OK, Julie Garland Rother of Okarche, OK, four great grandchildren Whitney Garland, Natalie Garland, Jase Rother and Jett Rother and one brother Donald Burnett of Ozark, MO. Memorial services will be Saturday December 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend George Gilland officiating under the direction of Luginbuel funeral home. A gathering of family and friends will immediately follow the service in the fellowship hall.
