Rev. Elmer Hathaway, 82-year-old Nowata resident, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2009 at the Osage Nursing Home in Nowata. Rev. Hathaway was born July 31, 1927 in Mountainburg, Arkansas to Henry Hathaway and Maggie Garriett-Hathaway. Mr. Hathaway attended schools in Morris, Oklahoma and after graduation went to serve his country in the United States Army during WWII. Rev. Hathaway married Doshie LaDoris Howell on July 25, 1945 in Okmulgee. The two later relocated to Phelan, California where he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 40 years until his retirement. Rev. Hathaway was an ordained minister for the Assembly of God for more than 50 years. He loved deep sea fishing and spent a great deal of time singing and playing his guitar. Rev. Hathaway was also a craftsman who is known to have handcrafted four grandfather clocks. He returned to the Alluwe area four years ago to be by his daughter, Carol. Rev. Hathaway is survived by his wife Doshie who resides at the Osage Nursing Home; by three daughters, Linda Yorba, Shirley Carr, and Carol Robinson; by one brother, Floyd Hathaway; by eight grandchildren; and by numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, James Arthur Hathaway; by three brothers, Herbert, Lloyd, and Raymond; and by one sister, Emma Jackson. A memorial gathering for Rev. Hathaway will be held at 3:00p.m., Thursday, December 17, 2009 in the Benjamin Funeral Home Chapel. On-line condolences can be left for the family at www.honoringmemories.com.
