Elsie Mae (Applegate) Brown, 100, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2014 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Born July 6, 1913 to John Wesley and Thursa Anne (Hess) Applegate, she was the youngest in the Applegate family of 10 children in Newark, Ohio where she grew up, graduated from Newark High School with the class of 1931 and married. She worked at John J. Carroll Department Store, then Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation as a secretary/file clerk. She was a member of the First Church of Christ-Disciples and sang in the Owens-Corning Glee Club. Following retirement she lived in Southwest Florida for the next 30 years where she was a member of the First Christian Church of Cape Coral and the Cape Coral Senior Center until she moved to Bartlesville eight years ago to be close to family. Here, she became a member of Disciples Christian Church and was an active member of the 55-Plus Activities Club where she was an avid Bingo and Pinochle player. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by two husbands: Kenneth E. Thompson of Hanover, Ohio, and Ern E. Brown of Newark as well as by her six sisters, three brothers, and a son, Gary E. Thompson. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Thompson Keller (Jon); six grandchildren: Steven Bebout (Kim) of Vancouver, Washington; Joseph E. Bebout (Patricia) of Spring Hill, Florida; Robin Lynne Heffley of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Melinda Sue and Jay Thompson of Chananhan, Illinois; and Kendra Thompson Olsen (Joe) of Rockdale, Illinois, plus seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, as well as several nieces, grandnieces and nephews. For the past three years Mrs. Brown has made her home at the Bartlesville Health and Rehabilitation Center where she celebrated her 100th birthday at a party for family and friends this past July. Shortly thereafter she was named an official member of the Centenarian Club of Oklahoma. For the past six months her care has been overseen by Comforting Hands Hospice. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, January 21 at Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Inglish officiating. Music will be provided by OK Mozart's Dr. Randy Thompson and the Amici New York String Quartet. Interment will be a private service for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that those who wish can make donations in honor of Elsie (Applegate) Brown to Comforting Hands Hospice, 2450 S.E. Washington Blvd., Bartlesville, OK 74006.
