Ernest Leaton Shipp was born August 20, 1923, in Bristow, Oklahoma to Russell Edward and Della Marie (Keen) Shipp. He passed from this life February 6, 2011, at Jane Phillips Medical Center, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Ernest moved to Wyandotte as a small boy and received his education there. He later moved to Oregon and enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Company C, of the 3rd Medical Battalion from November 6, 1940, to June 30, 1945. During those years he served in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany, and ended up in Salzburg, Austria, at Hitler's Hideout. Earnest received a Purple Heart, and the Croix de Guerre with Palm 1st French Army medal. He was in seven invasions including the Battle of the Bulge. On October 6, 1945 he married Mary Margaret Sears in Commerce, Oklahoma. In 1954 he moved to Alluwe, Oklahoma. Ernest worked for Peabody Coal Company for 17 years and was an oil and gas drilling contractor. He loved to fish and had two very special fishing buddies, Bob Cunningham, and Wayne Coffee. Ernest served 16 years on the Alluwe School Board. On December 2, 2006 he married Margaret Mae Cargill. His family was very important to him and he created many memories and stories for his children and grandchildren to talk about, and to remember him with. He will be missed by all who knew him. Preceding Mr. Shipp in death are his parents, and one sister Dora Sears. Survivors include one son Jim Shipp, and wife Joanna, of Grove, Oklahoma, daughter, Cindy Carter, and husband Bob, of Childers, Oklahoma, step-children Jolinda Victory, and husband Ernie, of Sapulpa, Lester Robinson Jr., and wife Carol, William Robinson, both of Alluwe, one brother Clyde Shipp, of Sutherland, Oregon, five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, eleven step-grandchildren, numerous step great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Assembly of God Church in Chelsea, Oklahoma, with Rev. Allan Dunn officiating. Services are entrusted to Benjamin Funeral services of Nowata.
