Ethel Irene Lemmons, 91, of Nowata died on Friday afternoon November 23, 2007, at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Nowata, Ok, where she had been a patient for several weeks. On July 2. 1916, She was born to Joseph Ira and Minnie (Hoffman) Smith, on a farm near South Coffeyville, Ok. She was formerly married to Bertie L. Purdon, who preceded her in death in 1961. She then married Joseph G. Knowlton. He preceded her in death in 1972. Ethel then married Amos P. Lemmons, who preceded her in death in 1987. Ethel was the oldest of 10 children - 2 boys and 8 girls. She attended the Hoffman School, a one-room country school with one teacher. The school was built on land donated by her grandfather, Thomas Hoffman. Ethel Irene Lemmons is survived by one brother Lauren Smith, rural Wann, Ok. four sisters, Nevada Ryan, Manheim, PA, Berniece Ryan, Vinita, Ok, Margie Wharton, Burleson, TX, and Vesta Murdock, Coffeyville, KS, a step-daughter, Margaret Miller and step-granddaughter, Susie Miller, Winfield, LA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Ethel is preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, a brother, Clifford Thomas Smith, three Sisters, Clara Bowen, Chlora Daily and Edna Gowen. A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association and those who wish to contribute may do so in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Association, 2227 Skelly Drive, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74105 or to the National Kidney Foundation, 10600 S Pennsylvania Ave Ste 16-144, Oklahoma City, OK, 73170-4256, or to the donor's choice. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at the Chapel of the Benjamin Funeral Service in Nowata, Ok, with The Rev.
