Eunice Vaughn

September 21, 1923 — July 4, 2009

Eunice Evlyne Vaughn, 85, of Jay, Oklahoma went home to be with her Lord at 6:10 p.m., Saturday, July 4, 2009 at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri. Eunice was born September 21, 1923 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Stanley and Blanche (Simmons) Ziegler. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Jay, traveling in a covered wagon and camping along side the trail each evening. Eunice attended schools in Jay and graduated from Jay High School with the Class of 1941. On December 6, 1941, she married Elmo Nickell. They were blessed with two girls, Patsy and Jeane. Elmo died in battle in the Philippines on February 23, 1945 during World War II. On May 6, 1946, she married Maynard Vaughn. They were blessed with one son, Ronnie. After 53 years of marriage, Maynard died on October 25, 1999. Eunice worked for a time as a sales clerk for Nichols Brothers in Southwest City, Missouri and Otasco in Jay, Oklahoma. Eunice was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jay. However, Eunice was not just a Sunday Christian. Eunice lived her faith. She loved going to church and could be found there every time the doors opened. She was a member of the Ready Class, the WMU, assisted each year with Vacation Bible School, and was often baking her famous pies for church functions. She volunteered at Monroe Manor two days a week up until just three weeks ago. Eunice knew no stranger and her hospitality was well known. She was an excellent neighbor and took homemade apple dumplings to the new family on the block the day they moved in. She took great pride in the appearance of her flowers, garden, yard, and home that she maintained herself. Eunice was most proud of her family and kept in constant contact with them through her cell phone. Nevertheless, even her beloved family was not immune to her competitive spirit during fierce marathon Skip-Bo games. And by using her sharp mind, she more often than not proved to be the winner. In addition to her two husbands, one brother, Delmont Ziegler also preceded Eunice in death. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Floyd Hughes of Jay, and Jeane and Don Coon of Seattle, Washington; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Connie Vaughn of Jay; two brothers, Kenneth Ziegler and his wife Clara and Hughes Ziegler, both of Cathedral City, California; one sister, Esther Mae Houck of Jay; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2009 at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Jay. A Going Home Service for Eunice will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Jay with Reverend Josh Spires and Pastor Kirby Applegate officiating. Burial will follow in Maysville Cemetery, Maysville, Arkansas. Pallbearers will be her six grandsons, Scott Vaughn, Mark Vaughn, Mike Vaughn, Terry Hughes, Tyler Hughes, and Jeremy Newkirk. Randall Reynolds, Hunter Hughes and Wayne Florer will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. The family suggests memorials to First Baptist Church Mission Trip to Argentina, P.O.
