Evelyn Cornwell

Evelyn Graves Cornwell, 92, formerly of Tulsa, died March 3, 2009 in Grove, Oklahoma at the Grand Lake Villa Nursing Home. Mrs. Cornwell, one of eight children of Henry and Prudie Graves, was born February 26, 1917 in Lincoln, Kansas. After graduating from high school in Lincoln, she attended Fort Hays State Teachers' College in Hays, Kansas, and then taught school in Kansas for 5 years. Evelyn married Lowell W. Cornwell of Woodbine, Kansas in 1940. Lowell and Evelyn had four children, three boys and a girl. Lowell and two sons preceded Evelyn in death. After the Cornwells moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1955, Mrs. Cornwell finished her teaching degree at Tulsa University, and began teaching again. After her husband Lowell died, Evelyn went back to school and graduated with a Master's Degree in Education, Language Arts and Speech from Tulsa University at the age of fifty-two. Evelyn lived in Tulsa for 27 years, during which time she taught in the Tulsa Public School System until she retired in 1982. She was a member of the Tulsa Education Association, Oklahoma State Teachers' Association, National Education Association and Tulsa and State Retired Teachers' Association. After she retired, Evelyn moved to Disney, Oklahoma where she had purchased property on Grand Lake. She was an outdoors person and enjoyed fishing. In retirement, Evelyn raised dachshund puppies for a period of time, and operated a small craft shop east of Disney on Highway 28 called "The Country Goose." Evelyn grew up in the Methodist Church in Kansas, and was a member of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa while living there. After retirement, Evelyn was happy to be associated with the Ketchum United Methodist Fellowship. She was faithful in attendance, taught the Primary Sunday School Class, sang in the church choir and was Vice President of United Methodist Women. Surviving relatives include her daughter, Connie Cornwell Nunez of Tulsa; a son, Kevin L. Cornwell of Sandy, Utah; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; a brother, Dr. Max Graves of Overland Park, Kansas; and a sister, Opal Long of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 12 at 10:00 a.m. in the Ketchum United Methodist Church, Ketchum, OK, with Rev. Diana Bradford officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, at 3:00 p.m. on March 12, under the direction of the Luginbuel Funeral Home of Langley, OK. Evelyn asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Ketchum United Methodist Church, Boston Avenue United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
