Gay Nickels Matthews
Gay Matthews passed away on Wednesday, January 18, at her home in Los Alamos, New Mexico, after an extended fight against multiple myeloma. She was 63 years old. Gay was born November 23, 1948, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Robert and Murlene (Collins) Nickels. She grew up in Bartlesville, graduated from Bartlesville's College High School and attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. She married Scott Matthews, also a graduate of College High School, in 1968. Gay and Scott lived in Houston, Texas, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, before coming to Los Alamos. Gay was a homemaker and supported several church ministries with her sewing, teaching, and organizational talents. She was passionate about her family, sewing and a wide variety of handicrafts and arts and gave of her talents generously for the church, friends, and family. She was also a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout troop leader. While in Idaho, she loved exploring Yellowstone and Teton Parks with her family as often as they could. Gay's father, Robert Charles Nickels of Bartlesville, predeceases her. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Scott Matthews of Los Alamos; her son Jonathan Matthews and his wife Guadiana Matthews of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; her daughter, Amy Pillay and her husband Gautam Pillay of Williamstown, New Jersey; three grandchildren, Arianna Matthews, Nathan Matthews and Julianna Matthews; her mother, Murlene Nickels of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; sister Susan Greenwood of Aurora, Colorado; sister Carolyn Wallain of Anderson, Missouri; and sister Marilyn Phoenix of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Services will be held Monday, January 23, at 11am at First Baptist Church of Los Alamos. She will be buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and there will be a memorial service on Thursday, January 26, at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church in Bartlesville. Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Los Alamos in honor of Gay's life and ministries to others.
