Gerald Edgar Coats, 85 year old rural Vinita resident died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at the Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa. He was born August 31, 1926 in Strang, Oklahoma to William Madison Coats and Ida Stuart Coats. Gerald served his country during World War II in the US Navy, on the USS Franklin Aircraft Carrier, which was attacked by Japanese Kamikaze Pilots. He was employed for many year with Crane Carrier in Tulsa. Gerald married Bernadine Redmond on March 5, 1973 in Durant. They moved to this area 33 years ago from Tulsa. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion and the Tulsa Local #543 Teamsters Union. Gerald enjoyed his farm, gardening, raising goats, lama's and just keeping the farm up. The family includes; his wife, Bernadine of the home, four children, Sharon Kay Thompson of Canon City, Colorado, Jerry Dean Coats of Newport News, VA, William Edgar Coats of Adair and Glen Allen Coats of Claremore; eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Billy Kenneth Coats; his sister, Melissa Evelyn Gay. The visitation will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Luginbuel Funeral Home in Vinita. Burial will be at the Benge Cemetery near Adair.
