Harold Maynard

November 26, 1935 — August 3, 2017

Harold Lyman Maynard 81 year old Grove resident, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at his home, with his wife Janette by his side. He was born on November 26, 1935 in Vinita to Luther and Roxie (Wright) Maynard. Harold attended and graduated from the Vinita School System in 1954. He married Janette Smith, the daughter of George and Virginia Smith on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1953 at Vinita's Trinity Baptist Church. Harold worked for Archer's Cleaners, Leo Jolly's Furniture Store, Carter's Shopping Center in the butchers department, Meadow Gold Milk Company, he also owned and operated a service station in partnership with Marvin Miers. They sold the service station and he went to work for Walter Vogel and Vogel Oil Company, he also invested in the company. During this time he took night classes at NEO A & M College in Miami, then later commuted to Teachers College in Tahlequah, where he received his Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling. He taught psychology, history, then became Vinita's High School Counselor, where he worked until retirement in 1992. He loved working with the students and made many lifetime friends. Harold was saved and became a member of Trinity Baptist Church in May of 1949. He loved the Lord and his church, later he became an ordained deacon. Harold taught Sunday School for many years at Trinity and later at First Baptist Church in Grove for several years. Harold loved working with his hands, he had built a home for his mother Roxie. He and Janette also bought an apartment house which he renovated to be their home on Miller Street across from the Vinita Middle School. In his spare time and in the summer, he bought and renovated other places, just because he loved the work. Harold was also an avid shooter. After retiring and thirteen years of living in their home, they sold it to a wonderful family, who became "their kids". Harold and Janette moved to Grove in 1997, and became members of the First Baptist Church in Grove. He taught the Joy Class (Jesus 1st, others 2nd, you last) until his health issues became a burden. He loved teaching and loved his church friends and his Pastor Jim Paslay and wife Lorie. Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers, Virgil, Terry, and Rufus F. "Pat" Maynard; and sister in-law, Jamie. The family includes: his wife Janette of the home; a brother Noble Maynard of Independence, MO; nieces and nephews, Toi Sue Shaw of Kansas City, MO, Terry "Bussey" Maynard of Arkansas, Dr. Chris Maynard and wife Sarah of Tennessee, the Rogers family of Indiana, special daughter, Teresa (McKinney) Cleland and husband Rusty of Phoenix, Arizona, Godson, Jared Thompson of Mesquite, TX; sister in-law, Wateena "Teena" Moseley of Grove, niece, Shellee Pemberton and husband Michael, great-niece, Erin Leggett and husband Derek, their children, Reese and Kohen, great-nephew, Todd Pemberton and his daughter Adi; also several cousins and friends. Friends may pay their respects from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at the Worley Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove. The life celebration service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Grove, with Pastor Jim Paslay officiating. Interment and Military Rites will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Vinita. Friends may give to the Baptist Childrens Home of Owasso, 1270 East 76th St North, Owasso, OK 74055-4022, or to the Charity of Choice. Online condolences may be made at www.honoringmemories.com.
