Haskell Murrell Whaley, 88, a resident of Vinita, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at the Rosewood Terrace Retirement Center. Haskell was born August 16, 1919 in St. Jo, Texas to Trouse Lamar Whaley and Martha "Ada" Franklin Whaley. He is survived by his four children: Susan Hutchins and husband Kevin; Lynda Reynolds and husband Charles; Dennis Whaley; Kerry D. Whaley and wife Linda. He is preceded in death by his brothers: Morris Lamar Whaley and T.L. Whaley; his sister, Thelma Bowles and one niece, Joy Wood. Haskell will also be missed by his grandchildren: Erin Lindsey, Seth Michael Hutchins, Jeff Reynolds, Sean Reynolds, Keri Reynolds, Zachory Whaley, and MacKinzie Whaley, and his two great-grandchildren. Haskell served his country honorably as a Master Sergeant in the United States Army. Later he went to work in the Tuna Fishing industry for the San Diego Tuna Association as their Chief Engineer. Haskell worked in the Tuna Fishing industry for thirty-five years. he traveled throughout much of the United States in his R/V. He also traveled internationally, enjoying his visits to locations such as the Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) in Milan, Italy and the Galapagos Islands. At one point in his life, Haskell was shipwrecked as a result of the watchman falling asleep. Haskell would be quick to tell you that no lives were lost as a result of the shipwreck. Many other people will miss Haskell. He will be particularly missed by his "Vinita Family" the Briley's. Skip and Jody Briley, Christy, Dylan and Brianna Davis, and Jalene, Chad and Shyanne Wells. A private family graveside service will be held at the Coker Cemetery in St. Jo, Texas on Monday, January 28, 2008. Those services will be under the direction of the McCoy Funeral home in Coker, Texas. Local Services are entrusted to the Luginbuel Funeral Home of Vinita.
