Helen R. Walker, 74 year old Vinita resident, died Wednesday November 17, 2010 at Rosewood Terrace in Vinita. She was born February 20, 1936 in Adair, Oklahoma to Clarence "Shorty" and Opal (Garner) Hughes. Helen married George Walker on November 22, 1965 in Columbus, Kansas. She had worked at Carter's for several years, before she and George started their own business, George's Garage in Vinita. After selling the Garage, Helen went to work at the Vinita Daily Journal on November 7, 1984. In the 21 years at the Journal, Helen was involved in many events. Helen was chosen "Belle of the Ball" for the Calf Fry, Chamber of Commerce President in 2004, Vinita Leadership Class of 2004, American Cancer Society Daffodil Days, Sidewalk Sale Chairperson, Lions Club President, Craig County Fair Pageant Chairperson, Vinita Retail Trades Committee President, Vinita 2020 Vision, Chamber Bunko Tournament Coordinator, Vinita Education Foundation President, Chamber ribbon cuttings, among the many activities she participated in. She was the first female to become a Lions Club Member. She retired from the Vinita Daily Journal in January of 2006. The family includes: her husband George A. Walker of Vinita, her sons, David Fiedler of Melbourne, Florida, Randy Fiedler and wife Kim of Miami, her daughter, Shanny Housman of Vinita; grandchildren, David Fiedler, III of Tahlequah, Tiffany Fiedler of Tahlequah, Sherriel Fiedler of Fort Gibson, Amber Smith of Valdosta, Georgia, Lindsay Roberts of Collinsville, Cody and T'Don Marquis, Karlee Housman, all of Vinita; numerous great-grandchildren; siblings, Connie Lundy and husband Ray of Ketchum, Betty Jordan and husband Paul of Adair, Paul Hughes and wife Cheryl of Wetmore, Kansas. Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers, Markie, Leroy and Earl Hughes and many other relatives. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the Luginbuel Funeral Home. Casket bearers will be; Jim Heard, Roy Lee Cordry, David Hays, Mark Hays, Jeff Wood, Charlie Turner, Chris Hughes, Stanley Crawford, and Lowell Walker. The Graveside service will be held Friday, November 19, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Timpson Chapel Cemetery with Pastor Leland Bartlett officiating.
