Vinita, OK - Herman Lawton Hicks, 78, died Tuesday morning, August 14, 2007 at Craig General Hospital, Vinita, Oklahoma. Herman was born May 2, 1929 at Mountainburg, Arkansas to Herman Raymond Hicks and Myrtle (Purdue) Hicks. He grew up in Arkansas and moved to Bristow, Oklahoma at age 12. Herman also lived at Eucha and Langley, Oklahoma, before joining the U.S. Army. He was with the Army for three years and then the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years. Herman fought in both the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts, before retiring from the military with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He has been a resident of Vinita since 9175, moving there from Spavinaw, Oklahoma. Herman married June Bingham on January 23, 1976 at Miami, Oklahoma. Herman was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Vinita. He loved to play music on his guitar, spoil the grandkids and watch Atlanta Braves baseball. Survivors include his wife, June, of the home; his children, Larry Hicks of Vinita, Sammy Hicks, Sr. of Jay, Oklahoma, Sonny Hicks of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Ronnie Hicks and Brenda Smoke of Spavinaw; step-children, Lenny White and Vynetta Jennings, both of Warner Robins, Georgia and Laura Hicks of Fritch, Texas; seven brothers, Lonnie and Tony Hicks of Warner Robins, Georgia, Lloyd, James and George Hicks, all of Vinita, Lawrence Hicks of Salina, Oklahoma and Darrell Hicks of Inola, Oklahoma; two sisters, Opal Evans of Spavinaw and Berdeana Osborn of Muskogee, Oklahoma; 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two special friends, Omar Walker of Bluejacket, Oklahoma and Ray Hastings of Collinsville, Texas. Herman was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel with private interment at a later date in Spavinaw-Strang Cemetery, Spavinaw, Oklahoma. Family suggests donations in lieu of flowers to Paralyzed American Veterans and donations may be left at the funeral home.
