Homer Lundy

Homer J. Lundy, 70 year old well known resident of Cleora (Gran Tara), died Thursday morning, September 3, 2009 at his home, after an extended illness. He was born May 18, 1939 in Salinas, California to Homer and Shirley (Evertson) Lundy. Homer was a graduate of Afton Public Schools. He married Carol Jean Ferguson on July 18, 1959 in Miami; she preceded him in death on March 6, 2005. Homer lived in Chicago and went to school there for 72 weeks of training at Devry Technical School, for residential TV communications and construction for automation. Later he lived in Tulsa for 12 years where he worked for Toledo Scales and Burl's office machinery repair. In 1974 he moved his family back to the Afton area and in 1976 became an employee of the B. F. Goodrich Tire Company. After the plant in Miami was closed in 1986, he moved with the company to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he retired as a foreman of maintenance in 2002, the company was Goodrich-Michelin at that time. That same year he moved back to Cleora (Gran Tara). Homer was an avid sports fan, following and coaching his children and grandchildren at their games. His last job was as a volunteer coach at Cleora Schools where he worked with the softball, track and basketball teams. Homer was also a collector of guns, coins, and knives. He had attended church at Carter Baptist, where he was baptized, the Temple Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa, and lastly the United Methodist Church of Cleora. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Carol, a granddaughter, Heather Winfrey in 1990, a sister, Edeth Gibson Culver, brother in-law, Kenneth Gibson, nephew, Craig Crane, niece, Riata Marsh, mother and father in-law, John and Ruby Ferguson, a brother Phillip George Lundy. The family includes: his three daughters, Kim Bates and husband Dale of Big Cabin, Jana Jarvis and husband Wayne of Miami, Terri Winfrey and husband Rick of Cleora; sisters, Barbara Crane and husband Dean of Bernice, Reva Colvin and husband Jim of Lilburn, Georgia, Elsa Johnson and husband Wayne of Afton, Nancy Newcomb and husband Mike of Cleora, Beath Marsh and husband Charlie of Grove, a brother, Chris Lundy and wife Donna of Afton; grandchildren, Richard Todd, III and wife Renee, Lee Anne Todd, Dustin Jarvis, Tony Jarvis, Chase Winfrey, Rian Winfrey; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Hallie Todd and Jaiden Elix, there are many other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2009 at the Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Afton School Gymnasium, with Pastor Rich Brasher and Pastor George Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery of Vinita. Online condolences can be made at www.honoringmemories.com. Friends may give to the Cleora Schools in Homer's Memory.
