Hubert Clayton Howard 81, of Nowata passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009 in the Nowata Nursing Home. Hubert was born on April 05, 1927 to Will Roosevelt and Dessie Mae (Greene) Howard in Bryson City, North Carolina. He received his education at Round Hill and Bryson City Schools in North Carolina. Hubert was in the CCC's for six months before he began working with his father on the Fontana Dam project of TVA he then joined the Navy in August of 1944. He became a Quartermaster third class and served aboard the USS Salomons and the USS Petrof Bay after completing his training at Camp Perry, Virginia. Hubert was based out of Norfolk Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia and was honorably discharged on June 05, 1946. Hubert met and married Kathleen Hicks on June 13, 1950 in Huston, Texas. They moved to Wichita, Kansas in August of 1950. He worked at Boeing until late 1958; he then worked at American Airlines in Tulsa until 1963. Hubert and Kathleen then ran a dairy until 1978; he also worked at Funk Manufacturing Company in Coffeyville, Kansas until his retirement in 1989. Hubert and Kathleen had 58 years of wonderful happiness and memories together. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. Hubert loved his family and enjoyed gardening, fishing, and hunting especially with his nephews and nieces. He is survived by his wife Kathleen of the home, 3 sisters Betty Dow, Barbara Stamper, and Linda Ballard all of Gastonia, North Carolina, 4 brothers Frank V. Howard, Jack Howard, Ronnie Howard, and Will Howard Jr. all of North Carolina, several nieces nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews and numerous other extended family members, 3 special people who gave much of themselves, Deborah Tuggle of Claremore, Anthony and Carolyn Hicks of Rural Delaware. Graveside services for Mr. Howard are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at the Martin Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Coldren officiating. Visitation will be held at the Benjamin Funeral Home on Monday, March 23, 2009 from 12pm until 9pm and Tuesday March 24, 2009 from 8am until 9pm.
