Jack Harmon, 89 year old resident of the Coves at Bird Island (Afton), passed away on Saturday, April 25th, 2015 at Hillcrest South Hospital in Tulsa, from complications of heart and lungs. He was born on November 2, 1925 to William F. and Gladys (Ernst) Harmon at the St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. Jack grew up in Wichita and attended school there and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy V-12 program and received his education from Central College in Fayette, Missouri, he then went to the Rice Institute in Houston, Texas and left there as an ensign. As a civilian he enrolled at Kansas State University and finished with a degree in mechanical engineering with a minor in business. While at Central College he met the love of his life and future wife, Berniece Carter. While Jack was at Rice, Berniece took her training as a Laboratory Technician at St. Lukes Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. After his discharge and while enrolled at Kansas State he and Berniece were married on August 10, 1947 in Chillicothe, Missouri, her hometown, and honeymooned in Minnesota. They were able to attend many college events together since Berniece was employed at a local Doctors Clinic as a laboratory technician. After graduating, they moved to Wichita to work with his Dad at the Harmon Machine Company. They lived in Wichita until 1982 when they moved the Company to Neodesha, Kansas. Jack and Berniece made their home in Neodesha, until moving to the Coves at Bird Island on the shores of Grand Lake. They have lived there enjoying fishing, boating, their many friends and the Cleora United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Berniece; daughters, Nancy Krikac and husband Doug of Santa Rosa, CA, Dr. Peggy O'Neill and husband, Dr. Patrick O'Neill at Purdue University in Indiana, Carol Butts and husband Jim of Preston, Maryland; a son, David Harmon and wife Susan of Cherryvale, Kansas; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a sister in-law and her husband in Palmetto, Florida. The family request donations be made to the Cleora United Methodist Church, 451154 E 395 Rd, Afton, OK 74331. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 10:00 AM, at the Cleora United Methodist Church, with Pastor Stephen Nation officiating.
