Jerry Leon Black, 78, of Nowata passed away June 1, 2015 at the North County Senior Living Center in Collinsville, OK. He was born February 14, 1937 in Lucien, Oklahoma to Jake and Vera (Guthrie) Black. Jerry was raised in Nowata and graduated from Nowata High School and received a degree from Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa. He moved to New Mexico for a short time before joining the U.S. Army. Jerry served 20 years in the service and retired, Dec. 31, 1979 with the rank of Master Sergeant. During his military service, Jerry was stationed stateside in Georgia, Arizona, Michigan and Texas and overseas in Germany, Japan, Italy and in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. Jerry was a Bronze Star recipient. After military service, Jerry retired to Nowata, where he was active in the American Legion Post 101 and VFW Ballard-Lack Post #2745. He loved fishing and spending time on his boat. Jerry is survived by his wife Mary of the home; three sons, Randy Black and his wife Carrie of Nowata, Jeff Black and his wife Vickie of Nowata, Greg Black and his wife Jenny of Littleton, CO; four brothers, Pete Black and his wife, Terri, of Langley, Dean Black of Coweta, Rodney Black of Nowata, John Black of Nowata; three sisters, Nancy Reeves of Nowata, Connie Anderson of Tulsa, Jackie Hathcoat, and her husband Tom of Broken Arrow, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Vera Black and a brother, Bob Black.
