Luginbuel Funeral Home of Vinita. 918-256-5555. Jewel A. Carter died July 23, 2017, in Vinita, Oklahoma where she had made her home for sixty-five years. She was born April 8, 1917 in Brooklyn, Mississippi to James and Emma Andrews. After graduating from Forest County High School she received a scholarship to Chillicothe Business College. She accepted a civil service job in Washington DC, where she met Harold Carter whom she married in 1940. They moved to Oklahoma in 1945. In 1952 Jewel and Harold purchased Boatright's Store which became Carters Shopping Center, and is now Carter's Foods. She was active in First United Methodist Church and PEO Sisterhood and participated in many community activities. Jewel and Harold enjoyed travel to many parts of the world. She was an avid reader and bridge player. She was a devoted Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday and was honored by the Oklahoma Centenarians. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Harold Carter, her parents James and Emma Andrews, three brothers and three sisters, her grandson Stephen Childress and son in law Ron Foster. She is survived by three daughters, Betty Foster of Fort Worth TX, Sharon Allen (Tom) of Vinita, and Kay Childress (Phil) of Overland Park KS. Seven Grandchildren: Cory Allen, Blake Allen, Brooke Allen, Chase Allen, Lisa Boulanger, Doug Foster, Emily Fowler and sixteen great grandchildren. She was greatly loved and will be missed by many friends and extended family members. A celebration of life will be held Friday July 28 at 1 pm at First United Methodist Church 314 W Canadian. Vinita. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Memorial Fund at the church or charity of choice. Online condolences may be made at www.honoringmemories.com.
