John Ernest Marshall, 79, of Grove, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday November 1, 2020. John was born August 3rd, 1941 in Galesburg, Illinois to Ernest (Ernie) and Lois Marshall. John’s father was later remarried to Bernetta (Bea) Story, who raised John. John is survived by four brothers, Wayne (Pat) of Fulton, MO., David (Carrie) of West Plains, MO., Alan (Diane) of Center Point, IA., and Carl (Annette) of Chariton, IA. John was also the uncle to eight nieces and three nephews, all surviving. In 1962 John married In Yon Bun in South Korea. She took the name Anna as part of her US citizenship. John and Anna later divorced.
John graduated from Bonaparte, IA., High School in 1959 and entered the US ARMY after graduation. John retired as a First Sergeant having served 21 years on active duty being posted to South Korea, Okinawa and Germany as well as locations in the United States. Upon retirement from the ARMY, John returned to the mid-west and drove a school bus for the Clark County School District, while obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Culver-Stockton College. John later moved to southwest Missouri and worked for the Veterans Administration supporting the Carthage and Joplin areas. John once again retired and relocated to the Grove, OK. area.
John was a dedicated patriot and was proud of his service. A graveside service will be held at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, MO. on 11/13/2020. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in John’s name to the Wounded Warriors Project.
