Baker - Jonas, S. (Joe) died Thursday afternoon, October 22, 2009 at the Oklahoma Veteran's Center in Claremore, at the age of 88 years. Joe was born on January 24, 1921 in Pawhuska, OK. As a young man Joe worked as a stonemason helper. He enlisted in the US Army in July of 1940, serving in WWII with Headquarters Battery VI Corps Artillery in Naples-Foggia, Southern France, Rome-Arno Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Ribbon, EAME Service Ribbon, One Silver Service Star and One Bronze Arrowhead for his service. He received an honorable discharge in July of 1945. Upon his return from the war, he married Mary Lucille Crossman in Las Vegas, NV. He was a lineman for Southwestern Bell Telephone until his retirement in February 1983. His wife preceded him in death on September 25, 1986, and on June 14, 1989 he married May Sutton in Las Vegas, NV, and they made their home in Bartlesville, OK. He was a member of the Faith Freewill Baptist Church, the American Legion and the Southwestern Bell Pioneers Club. He is survived by his wife May Baker of Grove, OK; a daughter, Connie Hinners and husband Carl of Ridgecrest, CA; a stepson, Gary Sutton and wife Rosanne of Bartlesville, OK; a stepdaughter, Anita Fields and husband Dewey of Grove, OK; a brother, Howard Carpenter and wife Myrna Carpenter of OKC, OK; a sister, Deloris and husband Otho of Pryor, OK; 7 step grandchildren; 6 step great-grandchildren; 1stepgreat-great grandchild; several nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Mr. Baker will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at the Colonial Chapel of the Neekamp-Luginbuel Funeral Home. Rev. Danny Hester of the Faith Freewill Baptist Church of Bartlesville, Ok. will preside over the services. Funeral services are under the direction of the Neekamp-Luginbuel Funeral Home.
