Loyd Hanon Cossey, age 97 of Bartlesville died after a brief illness Tuesday March 6, 2007 at Heritage Villa Nursing center in Bartlesville. He was born on November 29, 1909 in Wanette, Oklahoma the second son and last of seven children of William Henderson Cossey and Stella (Barnes) Cossey. He spent his early years on the family farm in Marlow, graduating from high school there. The only member of his family to attend college, he graduated from Central State University in Edmond in 1930, and obtained his Master of Science Degree from Oklahoma A&M University in Stillwater in 1940. He was first employed as a teacher in Watonga, OK in 1931, where he met and married Kathryn R. Compton. Subsequently, he was the Superintendent of Schools in Arnett, OK., worked in the state Education Department in Oklahoma City and was Coach and Superintendent of Schools at Barnsdall from 1941 to 1945. In 1946 he began work in the Natural Gas Department of Phillips Petroleum Co., and the family moved to Bartlesville in December of 1951. He retired from Phillips in 1973. Mr. Cossey was an outstanding athlete in several sports, especially tennis in his youth, and was a low handicap golfer. He was a member of Hillcrest Country Club for more than 40 years and played regularly. He also enjoyed working in the backyard vegetable garden growing a full range of vegetables and berries. He was a member of the Bartlesville First Christian Church for more than 50 years and a former Deacon there. His wife of 74 years, Kathryn, preceded him in death in 2005. He is survived by his three sons: Jerry, of Humble, Texas, identical twins Jim, of Bridgton, Maine, and Charles, of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and a daughter: Sue Cossey, of Lake Forest, Illinois, plus nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be Saturday March 10, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church with Rev. Gary L. Hagan officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Neekamp -Luginbuel Funeral home. Memorials may be made in Mr. Cossey's name to the First Christian Church.
