Marilyn Cox

June 25, 1927 — May 29, 2016

Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, Oklahoma 918-786-2261. Marilyn "Sue" Cox passed away quietly on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at the age of 88. Sue was born on June 25, 1927 in Terre Haute, IN, the daughter of the late Jessie Wesley Rhodes and Ruth Marie (Boyer) Rhodes. At age 5 years her father died, and times being hard for her family Sue went to live with her Aunt Jessie's family, her brother with another Aunt, and oldest sister Betty remained at home. Her mother worked hard as Principal of Wallace Elementary School in Hammond, IN and the family was reunited. Sue went on to college to get a Teaching degree from Indiana University. Her first job was teaching Kindergarten in Indiana. She married Robert "Bob" Harold Bentley and moved to Tulsa, OK in 1953. Two daughters were born to them, Barbara and Laura. She was a stay-at-home mother who devoted her life to her family and girls. Bob passed away in 1968 and Sue went back to teaching, first at the elementary school her daughters attended. During this time, she also attended night school and earned her Master's degree in Education from Tulsa University. Sue provided a wonderful home and life for her girls. She was singly focused on her family, living in a neighborhood filled with close neighbors who were always there to help. Sue kept close to her family in Indiana and her girls didn't lack for contact with cousins, grandparents, and other relatives. She took her girls on several wonderful trips that provide precious memories. Sue was a wonderful role model for her daughters. She sent both to college by herself and was always there to encourage, love, and support them. Sue remarried in 1980 when both girls were out of college, to Robert "Bob" Cox of Grove, OK. Bob and Sue loved to travel. They traveled extensively, taking grandkids on a few trips and enjoying the local Travel Clubs: Grand Travelers and "Good to Go". Sue and Bob once backpacked across Europe for a month and took many cruises. Her daughters were blessed with memories from the last two years of taking a girls cruise together with her. Sue was a cancer survivor with quiet dignity. She volunteered at Integris Grove Hospital for over 20 years, along with Bob. She touched many lives and gained many friends. She even started writing her biography. There were many memories, stories, and laughs shared. For the last 4 years, Sue lived at Autumn Place, Grove, OK. Bob had joined her there briefly, before he passed in May 2014. She cherished the friendships made there with everyone and they became family and home to her. She was a blessing in how she lived, her love was never-ending. She was a natural teacher who once said she'd pay the school to let her teach. She continued to teach us until her last gentle breath. She is loved and will be missed greatly, never forgotten. Special thanks also for the loving care by Grove Nursing Center and Good Shepherd Hospice. She is preceded in death by husband Bob Cox, parents Jessie and Ruth Rhodes, brother John Rhodes, and sister Betty Thune. Survived by daughters Barbara Young and husband Mitchell of Tulsa, OK; Laura Roberts and husband Darrell of Grove, OK; step son State Representative Dr. Doug Cox, M.D. and wife Drenda of Grove, OK; step daughter Sharie O'Neal and husband Bobby of Kingsbury, TX; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Sue was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Grove, OK where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 1pm with Pastor Robert Carter officiating. Interment will be after the service at Olympus Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove, OK.
