Mary Alexander, 82-year-old Nowata resident, passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at her home. Mrs. Alexander was born March 3, 1928 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to David A. Greene and Helen A. Shawl-Greene. She grew up and attended schools in Bartlesville. After graduation, Mrs. Alexander attended the Ward Belmont Finishing School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She later returned to Oklahoma, where she attended Oklahoma City University. While in Oklahoma City, Mrs. Alexander met Rev. Charles M. "Pappy" Alexander. The two were married on August 30, 1950 in Bartlesville. Mrs. Alexander was a freelance writer, reporter, and photographer for the Associated Press. She had also spent time as a reporter for the Bartlesville Examiner, the Nowata Star, and for the Tulsa World. Mrs. Alexander owned and edited the Barnsdall Times from 1980 until 1990 and also was part owner of the Wild Cat Community Newspaper in Tulsa. Mrs. Alexander hosted the Senior News and Views on the Bartlesville television channel for several years. She was also a member of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Alexander was a past board member of the Bluestem Council of the Girl Scouts and a member of the Osage Hills Gems and Minerals Society. She was a co-founder and President of the Tulsa Night Writers, a member of the Tulsa Mystery Writers, and a member of the Oklahoma Women's Writers Federation and the Oklahoma Writer's Federation. Mrs. Alexander was also a supporter of the Nowata Eldercare program and the Washington County SPCA. Mrs. Alexader is survived by three sons, Charles David Alexander and wife Laura and John P. Alexander, Sr. and wife Jeanette, and Bill Alexander and wife Michelle; by two daughters, Candy Fiedler and husband Curtis and Joyce H. Chitwood and husband Gene; by grandchildren, Christopher Clemmons, John P. Alexander II and wife Marcella, Joseph P. Alexander and wife Hollie, Don Alexander Blanchard and wife Sally, Teko Gallaway and husband Greg, Cody Chitwood, Zackery Chitwood, Joshua Chitwood, Chase Alexander, Kaden Alexander, Will Alexander; by great-grandchildren, Charlie Kate Alexander, Jay Harrison Alexander, Haylee Jo Alexander, Sadie Blanchard, Dominick Blanchard, and Daxton Gallaway; by a niece, Mary Helen Moricoli and husband John; by a nephew, David Greene and wife Claudean; and by a host of other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, by a brother, John Phillbar Greene; by a sister-in-law, Gladys Greene; and by a grandson, Austin Chitwood. Funeral services for Mrs. Alexander will be held at 2:00p.m., Monday, May 17, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Nowata with Rev. Emery Mason officiating.
