Luginbuel Funeral Home - Vinita - 918-256-5555 Mattie Martha (Epperson) Harrison, 95 year old former Big Cabin resident, passed away Wednesday, May, 14 2014 in Oklahoma City. Mattie was born in Big Cabin on December 30, 1918 to James "Pop" and Mary (Wood) Epperson. She was the youngest of the eleven Epperson children and always noted to be an inquisitive child. She was graduated from Big Cabin High 1936 excelling not only in academics but also attaining position as a guard on BCHS women's basketball team. Mattie then became the first member of her family to attend college. She began her education at the "Indian School" in Tahlequah completing her B.A. and ultimately receiving a Master's Degree in Education from Tulsa University. During the course of her education, Mattie met and married the love of her life, Roy Williams Harrison, on September 30, 1942. Roy was a budding western artist and Mattie was a born teacher. The two of them worked and traveled extensively throughout Oklahoma, California, Washington, ultimately settling in Alaska for 14 years, after she agreeing to go "for just one year". She got her start teaching first grade in one-room school houses and worked her way up to larger elementary schools. In later years Mattie worked at the State Department of Education as Director of Adult Basic Education for the State of Oklahoma, retiring in 1984. She was an active member of the Eastern Star for a number of years. She enjoyed reading, traveling, watching OU football and Thunder basketball games, and spending time with her family, especially the grandkids. Survivors include her daughter Patti Levin and husband David of Oklahoma City, grandchildren: Laura Nelson and Jeremy Levin, and 5 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy Harrison, and 10 siblings. Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Big Cabin Cemetery.
