Melvin Shutt

Melvin Spencer Shutt, 89, long-time resident of Bartlesville, Okla., passed to his eternal home on July 4, 2018. He was born in Wilburton, Kan., to Glenn Oliver Shutt and Wilma Cummings Shutt on July 27, 1928. It was there he experienced the Dust Bowl first hand. He graduated from Winfield (Kan.) High School in 1946. Melvin joined the U.S. Marines out of high school and proudly served his country in China and Guam. He was grateful to join an Honors Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2013. Melvin married Virginia Ellen Rowe on Nov. 9, 1950, in Winfield, Kan. The couple moved from Wichita, Kan., to Bartlesville in 1956 when Melvin took a job at Phillips Petroleum Co. Mel and Virginia had a wonderful marriage of 65 years. They enjoyed many memorable trips, both across the U.S. and abroad, antiquing, trips and visits with friends, and most of all, being with family. Melvin freely gave his time and his love to their three children. He was a loyal and talented commercial artist for Phillips, retiring in 1986 after 30 years of service. He then enjoyed the opportunity to work for Service and Technology Corporation in Bartlesville. Melvin was a fun and caring friend to many, brightening up any room with his humor and warmness. He amazed people throughout his life with his artistic abilities, generously sharing his oil paintings with family members. Highlights of his work included a group caricature he did for Phillips President Boots Adams' 66th birthday and ink drawings of classic cars. Melvin had many wonderful memories and experiences. Meeting John Wayne in Bartlesville and visiting with Norman Rockwell in his Massachusetts studio were among the top. Mel stayed physically active throughout his life and cherished his experience playing basketball in the National Senior Olympics. Melvin and Virginia were long-time, active members of Good Shepherd Church and were blessed by many friendships and ministries, particularly during the loss of their youngest son. In addition to his three children, Melvin was a loving grandpa and great-grandpa. He built forts and playhouses, took bike rides and walks, shared his art talents, and was quick to enjoy a sweet treat. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Virginia, son Douglas Ryan, three sisters and a brother. Survivors include son Gary Shutt and his wife Sheryl of Edmond, Okla.; daughter Cathy Shutt of Edmond, Okla.; grandchildren Casey Shutt (Sarah), Tristan Shutt and Jennifer Cody (Thomas); and great-grandchildren Cora Shutt, Henry Shutt, Oliver Shutt and Xander Cody. Melvin and his family wish to thank the entire staff of Brookdale Danforth in Edmond, Okla., and Physician's Choice Hospice for their care and compassion, as well as Rev. Dale Scott for his loving ministry. A home-going celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Good Shepherd Church with Rev. Dale Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Arnold Moore & Neekamp funeral home.
