Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, Oklahoma, 918-786-2261 Mildred Elizabeth Fleming, 98 year old resident of Grandwood Assisted Living Center passed away on July 27, 2018 at Integris Grove Hospital.
Mildred was born on May 10, 1920 in Hastings, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of James Henderson Meeks, born in Bonham, Texas, and Susannah Wilhelmina Velau Meeks, whose parents rode a covered wagon from South Dakota to Hastings, Oklahoma Territory. Mildred devoted 45 years of her life to education. She earned over 190 college hours in elementary and secondary education and library science from the University of Central University (BA '40), OU, OSU, OBU and other Oklahoma colleges. She held teaching positions all over Oklahoma including: Verden, Oklahoma City, Sapulpa, Shawnee and Harrah. She was the city librarian at the Carnegie Public Library in Shawnee. During her teaching career, she taught K-12, special education, and home kindergarten. In her retirement years, Mildred lived in Reedville, Virginia for 25 years. In 2015, she relocated to Grove, Oklahoma.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband James W. Fleming, Sr. (married April 10, 1943), her parents, and siblings Zola Beaves, Marguerite Freeman, and J. H. Meeks, Jr. She is survived by her sons James W. "Bill" Fleming Jr., and his spouse Sherry of Reedville, Virginia and Grove, Oklahoma and Phillip R. Fleming of Grove, her daughter Laurel E. Miller and spouse Kyle of Greenwich, Connecticut, her brother Calvin Dwight Meeks and spouse Freda of Galveston, Texas, and sister-in-law; Mary Rayma Meeks of Sand Spring, Oklahoma. She was blessed with four grandchildren; James W. Fleming III and spouse Ingrid of Durham, North Carolina, Thomas E. Fleming and spouse Eve of Vancouver, Canada, Alexander E. Miller and Caroline S. Miller, and one great grandchild; Isabella Rose Fleming. Mildred will be dearly missed by numerous nieces and nephews and multiple other relatives.
A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:30 am till 12:30 am on Friday, August 3, 2018 at the Grove Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel. Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm with the Reverend Dr. Stephen Walls officiating, a former student of hers at Shawnee High School. Mildred will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Hastings Cemetery in Hastings, Oklahoma.
