Norma Miller

Norma Novella Sullivan-Miller, 91-year-old Nowata resident, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2007 at the Nowata Nursing Center. Funeral services for Mrs. Miller will be held at 2:00p.m., Wednesday, July 18, 2007 in the First Presbyterian Church in Nowata with Ben Killion officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Nowata under the direction of the Benjamin Funeral Home of Nowata. Mrs. Miller can be remembered with a memorial donation to the 10-33 Emergency Team, 321 E. Cherokee, Nowata, OK 74048. Norma Novella Sullivan Miller was born to William M. and Effie A Abel Sullivan on December 4, 1916 near Chelsea, Oklahoma. The following year she moved with her family to Nowata County where she spent the remainder of her life. She attended grade school in the Smith School (Bugscuffle) east of Alluwe. She graduated from the Alluwe High School in 1935 and received a B.A. Degree from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah. She taught school in Nowata County, which included the rural schools of Rutherford, Elm Bend, and Adair before going to the Nowata City Schools from which she retired in 1979 after teaching for 36 years. She had the honor of being chosen Teacher of the Year from Nowata County in 1974. She married James C. Gibson on October 29, 1938. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1969. She later married Edward W. Miller on March 19, 1977. He also preceded her in death on July 29, 1992. Mrs. Miller was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota Teacher Soroity, the Oklahoma Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association. She was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church of Nowata, a member of the Presbyterian Women's Association and a member of the Moore Circle of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Miller is survived by one step-son, Mike Miller and wife Diane of Edmonds, Washington; by two step-daughters, Terri Miller of Tulsa and Peggy Redman and husband Harold of Houston, Texas; by seven step-grandchildren, Leisha Lanzisera, Andrea Lesher, Jason Redman, Amanda Persinger, Sara and Jennifer Crawford, and Jesse Miller; by step-great-grandchildren, Meghan Bell, cale Persinger, Jake Lanzisera, Cade and Addison Lesher, Tyler and Alyssa Redman, Lindsey Miller, and Quentin Hall; by three nephews, William Sullivan and wife Cyndi of Green Valley, Arizona, Dewayne Sullivan and wife Joy of Eldorado, Kansas, Dennis Sullivan and wife Melinda of Wichita, Kasnas; by one niece, Geneva Crony and husband Richard of Wichita, Kansas; and by several great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents, by her two husbands, and by a niece, Novella McCoy in 2005.
