Otis Dean "Speedy" Woolman, 84 year old life time Vinita resident, died at his home on Monday, November 23, 2009 after an extended illness. He was born September 11, 1925 in Vinita to Ora Claude "Pat" Woolman and Lizzie (Jenkins) Woolman. Speedy attended school at Shanahan. He later went into the United States Army from October 1944 to November of 1946, serving during World War II with Company F, 303rd Infantry as a Private First Class, serving as an MP in the Phillipines. Speedy received many honors and commendations, including Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, with Bronze Star, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, and two overseas service bars. Speedy and Ora Mae (Barton) were married on December 22, 1956 in Vinita; she preceded him in death on August 19, 1995. He was a member of the Dale Peace Post #40 American Legion in Vinita, an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. Speedy loved and adored his grandchildren. The family includes; a son Keith Woolman of Vinita, a daughter, Kathy Markes and husband Patrick of Bison, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Jake Dodson, Marissa Dodson, Mackenna Markes, Jesse Dean Markes all of Bison; five sisters, Gladys Boesil and husband Larry of Farmington, New Mexico, Vivian Finnell of Pryor, Shirley Helton of Liberty, Missouri, Mary Thompson and husband Harley of Ramona, Kathryn Phillips and husband Sam of Hot Springs, Arkansas; two brothers, Oliver Woolman and wife Wilma of Vinita, Virgil Woolman and wife Buddy of Vinita, a special sister in-law Betty Ivey of Cleora. Those preceding him in death include, his wife, parents, brothers Ray Woolman and Thurman Woolman and one sister, Beatrice Gray. The family will receive friends at the Luginbuel Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, November 25, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. The graveside service will be held, Friday November 27, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Pheasant Hill Cemetery north of Vinita, with Pastor Bob Whitchurch officiating.
